photoCOLOGNEEKoelnmesse and Internationale Photoszene Köln develop a shared umbrella brand: photo.COLOGNE

Internationale Photoszene Köln e.V. is working with IPK <festival>, Koelnmesse GmbH, the Visual Gallery at photokina and the “photokina: köln fotografiert!” event to promote Cologne as a major photography centre – the 2010 photokina will be the highlight of the city’s premiere photography festival.

In the summer of 2008, Internationale Photoszene Köln e.V. and Koelnmesse GmbH agreed to work together to promote the theme of photography in the city. The partners have formed an umbrella brand to intensify their collective efforts for 2010. IPK and Koelnmesse are designing campaigns and events to establish and promote Cologne as a leading centre for photography. Koelnmesse Executive Vice President Oliver P. Kuhrt and IPK e.V. Chairman Dr Norbert Moos announced their plans and presented the logo of the new brand at a joint press conference. The City of Cologne, represented by the Head of the Cultural Department, Professor Georg Quander, welcomes the collective activities and supports them beyond the existing financial commitment for the Internationale Photoszene. “photo.COLOGNE, die internationalen Wochen der Photographie” (“International Photography Weeks”) will be held every two years during the month of the photokina trade show.

All of the global imaging sector’s leading companies will return to photokina 2008 to present to international trade visitors their increasingly diverse range of imaging technology and imaging application products for consumers and professionals.

No other trade fair offers such a comprehensive range of products and services from the world of imaging and for the photographic and imaging sector,” said Koelnmesse Executive Vice President Oliver P. Kuhrt. “The event can therefore rightly be described as the leading platform for the global digital communication sector.

photokina’s organizers – Koelnmesse and the Photographic Industry Association – expect approximately 1,600 companies from around 50 countries to attend the fair in 2008. As in 2006, the share of foreign exhibitors next year will exceed 60 percent.

Many of the exhibiting companies – including Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Canon – will also once again expand their exhibition areas in 2008. According to Kuhrt, this is a clear indication of photokina’s unique position as the sector’s leading international platform, where companies can present themselves to a high-caliber audience of international trade visitors. In 2008, photokina – the leading international trade fair for the photographic and imaging sector – is continuing its long history of success. With still about five months to go before the fair opens, the available exhibition space is nearly sold out, with more than 90 percent of the space already booked. Companies continue to show very strong interest in the trade fair. Koelnmesse reports, for example, that more than 100 new exhibitors have already registered to present their companies and products for the first time at photokina.

Many of the exhibiting companies – including Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Canon, and Leica – are also once again expanding their exhibition areas this year, with some exhibiting at much larger stands, continuing the positive trend of recent years. According to photokina’s organizers – Koelnmesse and the Photographic Industry Association – the reason for the growth is the trade fair’s unparalleled global importance for the photographic and imaging industry.

And this has also been recognized at the Redmond, Washington, headquarters of the software giant Microsoft: following a hiatus in 2006, this year the American global player is returning with a large stand at photokina. In addition, General Imaging, a new supplier in the camera segment, will for the first time be presenting its products at photokina. A total of about 1,600 companies from roughly 50 countries are expected at photokina.

photokina will take place from September 23 to 28, 2008, at the Cologne exhibition center. The fair is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to trade visitors and the public.
